Event: Stay Beautiful
Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town
Date: Saturday 6th June 2009
You were the stars, and stellar you were. In the absence of a band, the spotlight was enthusiastically seized by the SB regulars on a night which also saw the reappearance of a perversely piratical Tony Maggs after his sojourn in the Far East, free wedding cake for all, and a certain newly-married couple on the decks…
If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - some Polaroids, some digital (our own and other people’s harvested off Facebook) - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a smaller selection on our Myspace gallery. Go see!

STAY BEAUTIFUL THIS SATURDAY: 'America F#ck Yeah' Summer Party feat KASMS... (now with added Jacko) luring disco dollies to a life of vice…Stay Beautifulhttp://www.staybeautifulclub.co.ukhttp://www. myspace.com/staybeautifulclubhttp://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2347493121http://www.twitter.com/staybeautifulUKWE PLAY: SLEAZY GLAM // HI-VOLTAGE ELECTRO // GLITTER ROCK // SHOUTY GIRL MUSIC // F UCKED UP DISCO // '77 PUNK // NEW WAVE // ALTERNATIVE ANTHEMS // POP TRASH *SATURDAY 4th JULY: THE 'AMERICA, F#CK YEAH' SUMMER PARTY!*Ever since that nice Mr Obama got elected, it's been slightly more OK to think kind thoughts towards America. And, by happy coincidence, the next Stay Beautiful happens to fall on SATURDAY 4th JULY - Independence Day - so we're making it a special AMERICA, F#CK YEAH! party. Which basically means we'll be throwing in a load of songs relating to the USA (oh, and probably showing Team America: World Police on the big screen). What's more, it's also our annual SUMMER PARTY, so we'll be chucking in a bunch of songs to do with summer, sun, beaches, sunglasses, holidays and so on. And somehow still finding time to play all the usual amazing glam-trash-alternative tunes. It's a challenge, but if anyone can do it, we can... Oh, and if you would either WEAR SUNGLASSES or WEAR SOMETHING AMERICAN (or come as a famous American), all the better! *KASMS ARE GONNA BONE YOU*Our live band this month aren't American, nor are they exactly summery, but hey, we're perverse like that. The insanely-hot-right-now KASMS ( http://www.myspace.com/kasms ) are invariably described as leading lights (darks?) of the Nu Gloom movement by the press - the band prefer to describe themselves as 'shriekbeat' - but if you've caught any of their livewire shows, possibly on their recent tour supporting The Gossip, or got your hands on their just-released debut album Spayed (featuring the brilliant single "Bone You"), you'll already know they're a far more chaotic, frenzied and exciting entity than most of the other acts on that scene. This is due, first of all, to lead singer Rachel Mary Callaghan, who appears to be physically incapable of standing still, but also to the glorious "post-punk tribal" (NME) racket - think early Siouxsie, think Bow Wow Wow, think Daisy Chainsaw, think X-Ray Spex - kicked up by her band, who feature a former Test Icicle on drums. Get your arses down to SB early, and find out for yourselves what all the fuss is about. *WEAR A WHITE GLOVE FOR JACKO*Like many of you, we at Stay Beautiful were shaken down to the ground by the news of the death of the insanely talented (and talentedly insane) MICHAEL JACKSON. So, we'll be paying tribute by playing a selection of his very best songs (with and without his brothers) over the course of the night, in amongst the USA tunes, the Summer tunes and the usual SB tunes (yeah, it's a crowded playlist, but we can make it work!), and showing his videos on the big screen. And we want YOU to take part. If you have WHITE GLOVES, wear one. (And don't be greedy: give your spare to a gloveless friend!). Or some other Jacko-related accessory, perhaps. Hell, maybe even dress up as him completely (he was, after all about as much of a 'famous American' as you can get.) We wanna see you moonwalking your legs down to the bone. Shamone... *ADMISSION PRICES*Regular admission prices are as follows. Standard price is £7 (i.e. if you can‘t even be bothered to pick up a flyer, bring some sort of concessionary ID, or wear an SB badge). However, for very early birds, it's just £4 BEFORE 10.00pm, and if you come with a flyer (printable version: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/eflyer.htm ), NUS/DSS card or a Stay Beautiful badge, it's now just £5 ALL NIGHT! *WHERE IT'S AT*Stay Beautiful's current home is the PURPLE TURTLE ( http://www.purpleturtlebar.com</url> ), 61-65 Crowndale Rd NW1 (for directions and transport information, see our 'Info' page: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm ), just 1 minute's walk from Mornington Crescent tube (and about 5 minutes from Camden Town. *OPENING HOURS AND AGE POLICY*Stay Beautiful opens at 9.00pm and closes at 3.00am. Please note that The Purple Turtle is an over-18s venue and ID MAY BE REQUIRED, so if you think you may look underage, please bring one of the following: an NUS card (with a credit card), a passport, or a driving license. *CHEAP BOOZE, FREE BOOZE!*Drinks at the Purple Turtle are, you'll be glad to hear, served at pretty reasonable, pubby prices anyway (certainly compared to one or two of our previous homes). And, to set you on your way towards alcoholic oblivion, we now have an amazing HAPPY HOUR from 9pm-10pm! The frankly irresistible deal is 2-FOR-1 on Fosters, Strongbow, Bells/Gordons/Bacardi Oro/house vodka (with mixer), and pitchers of Jesus Juice. What's JESUS JUICE, we hear you ask? It's a cocktail served exclusively at Stay Beautiful - a delicious and potentially head-fvcking blend of vodka, Archers, cranberry, lemonade and fresh lime - at £8.50 per pitcher ALL NIGHT (a wide variety of other cocktails will be served at a tenner per pitcher). Furthermore, as aficionados of messy vodka-guzzling will be aware, Stay Beautiful has a somewhat notorious tradition called the WATERING CAN SONG... *SHE WAS MORE LIKE A BEAUTY QUEEN FROM A MOVIE SCENE...*...and this month's Watering Can Song, in honour of the deceased King Of Pop, is "BILLIE JEAN" by MICHAEL JACKSON. So, when you hear that unmistakeable drumbeat, you know it's time to get wet! *LET'S ALL HAVE A PICNIC!*In addition to Stay Beautiful proper on Saturday 4th July, we have one more ever-so-exciting date for your diary. The day after SB, in other words SUNDAY 5th JULY, we'll be throwing our annual STAY BEAUTIFUL PICNIC! We didn’t get one last year due to rain, but we’ve checked the long-range weather forecast and it promises a dry day. It's an excuse to chat and chew over last night's gossip without the deafening blare of a nightclub soundsystem (we'll probably bring an mp3 player and speakers, mind), catch up with old friends and make new ones, and generally have a laugh on the grass. From 3.00pm on the Sunday afternoon - a soberingly short twelve hours after the club closes its doors - until quite late (probably until it gets dark), we'll be gathering somewhere near the 78m summit of PRIMROSE HILL, the marvellous mound with spectacular views of London set in a disgustingly celebrity-studded neighbourhood. (Look out for Simon's horns, or a leopard blanket, or a bunch of people with hangover-defyingly bright clothing and hair. You'll know it's us.) If you don't know where Primrose Hill is, the nearest tubes are probably Chalk Farm or Camden Town, there's a map here, and if you get lost, follow any sign for the Zoo, and Primrose Hill is opposite the main entrance. Bring food and booze (plenty of supermarkets in Camden, including two Sainsburys and a Tesco, and countless take-aways). And bring guests. Anyone's welcome! In the event of serious rainfall or bitter cold, which one cannot rule out in the British summer, we'll retreat to THE DUBLIN CASTLE on Parkway ( http://www.myspace.com/thedublincastle ). But we hope it doesn't come to that. Either way, it's a lovely way to spend a Sunday. *FUTURE DATES*Stay Beautiful happens on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly! SPELLBOUND (Brighton) with guest DJ 'Random' Jon Poole THIS SATURDAY! SPELLBOUND The 80s Night For People Who HATE 80s Nights brought to you by DJs CHERRY FOXXX and SIMON PRICE (the people behind London's legendary Stay Beautiful club) Add us: http://www.myspace.com/spellboundbrighton Join us: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=145725750216 Follow us: http://www.twitter.com/spellboundclubVenue: Komedia Studio Bar, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN (see http://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton for detailed travel info) Opening hours: 9:00pm-3:00am Admission: £5 standard, or £4 with flyer/NUS/DSS (you can print out an eflyer here: http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/18/l_9a81007e6c054ca89fffb2fa0543367a.jpg ) 9.00pm-3.00am on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH through 2009 NEXT SPELLBOUND: SATURDAY 20th JUNE This month, we’ll be welcoming our first guest DJ. He’s the Brighton-based bass-playing legend ‘RANDOM’ JON POOLE, for many years a member of The Cardiacs, and after that The Wildhearts (not to mention his own band God Damn Whores - http://www.myspace.com/goddamnwhores ), and he’s now been recruited by an actual 80s band, Scouse “First Picture Of You” hitmakers The Lotus Eaters. And he really knows his 79-85 stuff, so you’ll be in very safe hands for an hour or so… ARRIVE EARLY, BUT IN CASE YOU DON’T… We know that many of you have had the unfortunate experience of being turned away from our first two nights because we were full. We've had a meeting with the Komedia management about this and, fingers crossed, there'll be greater flexibility on the door as a result, and even when we hit one-in-one-out, you won't have to queue up for quite as long in future. That said, the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY! CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK! Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £2.50, exclusively for Spellbound! And if that doesn’t appeal, then you can also buy straightforward pints of Strongbow and Fosters for the same price! INTRODUCING THE UNDERPANTS SONG! If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a pint of the aforementioned Snakebite & Black for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the lucky pants with a Spellbound ‘eye’ logo rubber-stamped inside the gusset, you can exchange it at the bar for a pint of S&B. And if not, then hey, you’ve still got a free pair of undies… WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT Why are we doing this? Well, first of all, for FUN, obviously. But also because we strongly believe that the greatest music ever made came out of Britain between Tubeway Army's "Are 'Friends' Electric?" appearing on Top Of The Pops in June 1979 and the Live Aid concerts in July 1985. (We'll allow a couple of years' leeway either side for anything particularly brilliant, but that was the start and end of the Golden Age, we reckon). And because we strongly believe that this era is poorly-served by cheesy retro club nights with a smirking, ironic 'guilty pleasures' mentality, perpetuating the revolting lie that the 80s was all about Yuppies, Rambo movies, shoulder pads, mullets and all that glossy mainstream Reaganite/Thatcherite nonsense. SPELLBOUND is the alternative antidote to all that. We know that isn't how it was at all if you were actually there, we know that the 80s - particularly the first half - was actually the most fascinating, vibrant, diverse, flamboyant, exuberant, colourful and inventive time in pop history, and the C.R.E. (Campaign for Real Eighties) starts here. SPELLBOUND is a joyous celebration of the GOOD stuff, not the zillionth regurgitation of the same old overplayed rubbish. We’re all about the music you genuinely love, not music you pretend to be into for a cheap laugh. Which means you'll hear NO Jacko, NO Jovi, NO Wham!, NO Bros, NO Madonna, NO Astley... ...but LOADS of New Wave, Blitz Kids, Goth, New Romantic, Post-Punk, 2 Tone Ska, Synthpop, Indie, Electro, Alternative Rock, New Pop, Mod Revival, Rockabilly Revival, Gender Benders, Oddballs, One-Hit Wonders etc. You want names? Siouxsie, Specials, Smiths, Sisters, Soft Cell, Stray Cats, Scritti, Spandau, Squeeze, Sputnik, Style Council, Strawberry Switchblade... and that's just the eSSes (see 'Music' for a full playlist). And we'll be playing it on the original scratchy old vinyl whenever possible, cos it sounds better that way. SPELLBOUND aims for nothing less than to restore the reputation of an entire era... and to give you a bloody good night out in the process, without being forced to rub shoulders with wacky students in wigs, or lairy seafront/West St wankers in oversized school uniforms. Look forward to seeing you there! From the cradle bars comes a beckoning voice... it sends you spinning... you have no choice... FUTURE DATES We’ll be back doing our alternative-80s thing on SAT 18 JUL, SAT 15 AUG, SAT 19 SEP, SAT 17 OCT, SAT 21 NOV, SAT 19 DEC. But for now… See you on the 20th! Love (and pride) from Simon and Cherry xxx | | Friday, May 29th, 2009 | | 6:04 pm |
STAY BEAUTIFUL SAT 6th JUNE - YOU ARE THE STARS! (plus Mad Maggs, a certain pair of newly-weds) luring disco dollies to a life of vice…Stay Beautifulhttp://www.staybeautifulclub.co.ukhttp://www. myspace.com/staybeautifulclubhttp://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2347493121http://www.twitter.com/staybeautifulUKWE PLAY: SLEAZY GLAM // HI-VOLTAGE ELECTRO // GLITTER ROCK // SHOUTY GIRL MUSIC // F UCKED UP DISCO // '77 PUNK // NEW WAVE // ALTERNATIVE ANTHEMS // POP TRASH *SATURDAY 6th JUNE = YOU ARE THE STARS!*The next Stay Beautiful is on SATURDAY 6th JUNE, and - just this once - there will be no band cluttering up the stage with their dirty old drum kits and smelly old equipment, getting in the way of the SB show-offs. This time, more than ever, you, the Beautiful People, are the stars. The spotlight is yours. You know what to do... *THIS IS A PARAGRAPH ABOUT A SUPERHERO NAMED TONY*...and, speaking of inveterate exhibitionism, Stay Beautiful's own international man of mystery and Shady Mr Big, the notorious TONY MAGGS, will be making his long-overdue return from the opposite side of the planet to rock you into the wee small hours. (Is it a coincidence that he's left Thailand in a state of revolutionary chaos? We doubt it.) *GOING TO THE CHAPEL, AND WE'RE...*Lastly, this will be the first time we've ever had a newly-married couple on the decks! Stay Beautiful's President and First Lady still haven't decided whether they'll be changing their names to CHERRY PRICE or SIMON FOXXX after their big day (or just, y'know, carrying on as normal), but either way, they'll probably be somewhat sunburnt after their honeymoon in Rome. So, if you see a taxi pulling up outside with a load of tin cans tied to the rear bumper, now you know why. *ADMISSION PRICES*Regular admission prices are as follows. Standard price is £7 (i.e. if you can‘t even be bothered to pick up a flyer, bring some sort of concessionary ID, or wear an SB badge). Furthermore, as aficionados of messy vodka-guzzling will be aware, Stay Beautiful has a somewhat notorious tradition called the WATERING CAN SONG... *HEY LITTLE SISTER, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE...*...and, in honour of SB's marriage of the century, this month's Watering Can Song will be "WHITE WEDDING" by BILLY IDOL. So, when you hear the blond bombshell's top lip curling into action, you know it's time to get wet! *FUTURE DATES*Stay Beautiful happens on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly! What happened at Spellbound #2! (report, pics, playlist...) SPELLBOUND The 80s Night For People Who HATE 80s NightsAdd us: http://www.myspace.com/spellboundbrightonJoin us: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=145725750216Follow us: http://www.twitter.com/spellboundclub

WHAT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY 23rd MAY 2009 (SPELLBOUND #2!)We’ve heard some strange reasons for wanting your money back, but none so strange as the elderly couple who wanted a refund a mere half-hour into Spellbound #2, while we were just warming up to the sounds of the Mary Chain, on the grounds that there were “too many people”. In a way, we have to admit they had a point. After hitting capacity in 1 hour 45 mins at the first Spellbound, this time we filled the Studio Bar even faster. When we arrived, shortly before the one-off later start time of 10.00pm, there was already a queue of eager alternative-80s types stretching down Gardner St alongside that posh burger shop, and by 11.00 we’d pretty much hit capacity and one-in-one-out again. It’s gonna reach a point where the only way to break the record will be to instantaneously teleport everyone onto the dancefloor en masse, Star Trek-style. God knows what the grumpy duo were expecting when they left the house, and god knows what they look for in their ideal nightclub, but we’re glad to say we didn’t match up to it. If you want to be alone, Spellbound isn’t the place for you. Indeed, we already had dancers for only our third tune (Grace Jones covering Joy Div), and never looked back. Playing all the things we were kicking ourselves for failing to squeeze in last time, and keeping enough of the crowd favourites from Spellbound #1 and satisfying all your requests was a challenge and a bit of a juggling act, but we just about pulled it off. It’ll probably take three Spellbounds before we’ve scratched every itch and given at least one spin to all the artists we’ve been dying to play, and you’ve been dying to hear. The Underpants Song, in which we defile the solemnity of John Foxx’s greatest hit (and give away some free booze), is catching on, and we’re getting pretty skilled at the knicker-chucking (£1.99 for a 5-pack at £stretcher on London Rd!), and managed to score a direct hit by landing a pair of white Y-fronts on the head of a visiting Tony Maggs (of Stay Beautiful fame), making him look like a mediaeval serf for the duration of the song. Hope you all appreciated the extra visuals this time, by the way. A Kodak Carousel slide projector (you can’t get more authentically 80s than that, like being in an early Human League gig or something), filled with Spellbound-friendly iconography, from ABC to Zammo out of Grange Hill. Took up most of our Saturday, that did, and broke many a fingernail. Difficult to decide what the highlight of another absolutely awesome night was. Maybe, for us, it was the opportunity to risk crushing our elaborate hairstyles by putting on our authentic Devo ‘flower pot’ hats for “Whip It” (£20 each, merch-suckers that we are), or the chance to do some Alan Partridge fretless air-bass to “Music For Chameleons“ by the Nume. Or maybe it was “Swords Of A Thousand Men” by Tenpole Tudor, which prompted an absolutely jubilant outbreak of hoorah-hoorah-hoorah-yaying. Or maybe it was the “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” finale, which saw clusters of people with arms round each other, emotionally belting out their finest Almond impressions. We must have been doing something right anyway, because the drunken throng who stuck with us to the very end literally would not let us pack up and leave, demanding an encore (“One more song! One more song!”). We quickly grabbed the first suitable thing that came to hand, and it turned out to be something we’d already played (“Girls On Film”), but by that point nobody was complaining. Oh, before we get to what we actually played, we ought to mention that after a couple of months of odd dates and changing start times, it’s gonna get much easier to remember from now on: we’re gonna be opening at 9.00pm on the THIRD SATURDAY of every month. The next one’s on SATURDAY 20th JUNE, and we’ll be welcoming our first guest DJ. He’s the Brighton-based bass-playing legend ‘RANDOM’ JON POOLE, for many years a member of The Cardiacs, and after that The Wildhearts (not to mention his own band God Damn Whores), and he’s now been recruited by an actual 80s band, Scouse “First Picture Of You” hitmakers The Lotus Eaters. And he really knows his 79-85 stuff, so you’ll be in very safe hands for an hour or so. (If you look at this month’s photos, he’s the over-enthusiastic shaven-headed maniac on his knees with his hands in the air in one of the crowd scenes.) What happened at SPELLBOUND #1... (and #2 coming up this Sat!) SPELLBOUND The 80s Night For People Who HATE 80s NightsAdd us: http://www.myspace.com/spellboundbrightonJoin us: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=145725750216Follow us: http://www.twitter.com/spellboundclub

WHAT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY 11th APRIL 2009 (THE ALREADY-LEGENDARY OPENING NIGHT!)If you take no risks, you get nowhere. Having lived in Brighton for a year and a bit, and spent a lot of time taking in the local club scene and just talking to people, we (Simon Price and Cherry Foxxx) had a hunch that there might be a hunger out there for an 80s club that actually played the best music from the era, as opposed to the same old overplayed kitsch crap you hear at cheesy tourist nights, or wacky student nights, or ironic tosser nights. We weren’t gonna take any chances on word-of-mouth alone though, so for weeks before our opening night we got on our bikes like we were Norman Tebbit and worked till we were more musclebound than Spandau Ballet to make sure there were flyers and posters all over town, got ourselves featured in all the local listings mags, as well as recruiting you lovely people via the internet. And wow, did it pay off. It quickly became clear that the first-ever Spellbound was, to use modern parlance, an epic win. We got into Komedia early, set up our vinyl banner on one wall, our slide projector pointing at the other and trained our smoke machine on the floor, and opened the doors at 9.00pm. Amazingly, 10.45 it was already 1 in 1 out with a queue right down Gardner St, with the bouncers having to turn scores of people away. Which is a real compliment, on the one hand, but on the other hand it broke our hearts to know that people who had made the effort to come out especially to hear our music were gonna go home disappointed. All we can do is say a massive sorry to anyone who didn’t make it inside, and advise you to arrive as early as possible next time (cos we can’t sell advance tickets). The crowd was a good-natured, super-stylish, very dressed-up and brightly-coloured mix of 18-21 year olds discovering 80s music ‘as new’, and 30-40-somethings who remember it all from first time around. As soon as we had our first dancers, to “She’s In Parties” by Bauhaus (hello Rossi and Dandy Kitty!) we never looked back, and when we saw people mouthing the words to the more obscure songs (The Farmers Boys‘, Our Daughter’s Wedding, Department S), not just the big names, we really knew we were onto something special. OK, not everyone got it - there was a little gang of three randoms who complained about the smell of the smoke when they were standing right in front of the smoke machine (durr) - but, overwhelmingly, most people totally did. The Underpants Song, in which we threw a pair of white Y-fronts into the crowd every time John Foxx went “UNDERPANTS!!!” (yes, OK, it’s “Underpass”, but you see what we did there…), had many people baffled, but they’ll get used to it, cos we’re doing it every month. The lucky winning kecks, with the Spellbound eye rubber-stamped into the gusset (like a goth version of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets), were exchanged for free pints of Snakebite & Black over the bar. Speaking of which, our 80s-appropriate drinks promotion (£2.50 for Snakebite & Black) proved so popular that we ended up breaking Komedia’s record for takings in the Studio Bar. Can’t ask for much more than that. We’re not gonna pretend it was perfect. We had a few technical hitches (pretty much inevitable for a first night), and - this is hilarious - we had complaints about noise from Brighton & Hove Council for playing our poofy 80s eyeliner pop too loud, even though there was a heavy metal club upstairs. But it was so liberating for us to be able to play all that great music, and from looking at the faces around us, it was liberating for everyone else to be able to dance to it. We must have been doing something right, because when we looked up, our amazing door girl Nic was literally dancing on the tables. The only problem: we were kicking ourselves afterwards when we realised all the great acts we didn’t get around to playing. (For example, ABC, Kate Bush, Dexys Midnight Runners, The Jam, Grace Jones, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Psychedelic Furs, Talking Heads, Kim Wilde or Yazoo…) Oh well, there’s always next time. And the next Spellbound is THIS SATURDAY (23rd May) in the Studio Bar of Komedia, 44-47 Gardner St Brighton BN1 1UN. Admission £5, or £4 with flyer/NUS/DSS. Please note: doors open at 10.00pm this time only (due to a comedy event beforehand), and it’s all over at 3.00am. Swine flu? Credit crunch? Exam time? God only knows. But let’s not sugar-coat it: this was bad. The poorest-attended Stay Beautiful in a long time, and - fabulous though many of you looked - the principle of quality over quantity can only be stretched so far. If we didn’t tell the truth about that, you’d never believe us when we tell you about how fantastic the club normally is. But let’s accentuate the positive and recall some of the good memories we’ll take away from this one. Like… Napoleon being brilliant, much more impassioned and Dexys-like than expected, even when their nine members threatened to outnumber the crowd in front of them (an exaggeration, but not a huge one). Dancing with a stuffed tiger to Mud, and eating some very nice marble-effect fairy cakes. Collagen Girl and her Sigue Sigue Sputnik fishnet face mask. Bumping into the guy who wrote the theme tune for the Jeremy Kyle show. Seeing Stay Beautiful legend Davina Silver dancing on the stage to Bowie. Being given a big bouquet of flowers (OK, they were intended for the absent David Ryder-Prangley, but it’s the thought that counts. Getting so much genuine and heartfelt goodwill and encouragement from people who want this club to carry on going. We wanna say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who did turn up, and who heroically stayed to the very end. Utmost love and respect to you all. True SB soldiers. Lastly, your attention please: despite anything you may have heard, on the night itself and in the days since, no matter who may have said it, STAY BEAUTIFUL IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN. We’ve come too far and worked too hard to quit after one dodgy month, and we owe it to the people to whom it‘s become an irreplaceable ‘home‘. If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - some Polaroids, some digital (our own and other people’s harvested off Facebook) - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a smaller selection on our Myspace gallery, and some shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. *NAPOLEON = DYNAMITE!*Hello my pretty-pretties. The next Stay Beautiful is on SATURDAY 2nd MAY, and we have something really extraordinary for your eyes and ears. NAPOLEON ( http://www.myspace.com/napoleonmusik ) are one of the most talked-about new bands of 2009, and with good reason. An exuberant and eccentric soul-pop band from the city of Uppsala in Sweden whose ten, yes TEN members have an average age of 22 (fitting them all onstage is gonna be fun, but we managed with 9-piece Do Me Bad Things, and the stage was smaller in those days...), and who write songs with such glorious titles as "I Try To Despise The Ugly People (But The Beautiful Ones Keep Turning Me Down)" and Popjustice song of the day "I Love My Baby (But If Anyone Touches Her I'll Kill Them)" with a debut album called The Bohemians Won The Series And The Little Guy Joined The Band in the pipeline (check out the videos here and here ). They count Morrissey and Dexys Midnight Runners among their influences, and also The Boss and R Kelly (although they actually remind us of Orlando most of all!), plus they look amazing (which always helps). You want more? One of them is the great-great-grandson of the man who shot the King of Sweden, and another is the son of the man who was No3 on the KGB’s hit list after Russia invaded Czechoslovakia. Napoleon are sure to be musical Marmite: you're either gonna love them or hate them, but you won't wanna miss the start of their attempt to do a better job of vanquishing the British than their namesake did at Waterloo. *WIN THE NEW FISCHERSPOONER ALBUM!*The mighty electropop/performance art ensemble FISCHERSPOONER ( http://www.fischerspooner.com ) release their long-awaited third album, Entertainment, on Lo Recordings on Monday 4th May, and we have TEN COPIES for you to win! In order to get your beautifully-manicured fingers on this state-of-the-art piece of synthesizer-based, lampshade-headed awesomeness, just listen out on the night for a probably ridiculously simple question... *ADMISSION PRICES*Regular admission prices are as follows. Standard price is £7 (i.e. if you can‘t even be bothered to pick up a flyer, bring some sort of concessionary ID, or wear an SB badge). However, for very early birds, it's just £4 BEFORE 9.30pm, and if you come with a flyer (printable version: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/eflyer.htm ), NUS/DSS card or a Stay Beautiful badge, it's now just £5 ALL NIGHT! And, to set you on your way towards alcoholic oblivion, the Purple Turtle serves a special JESUS JUICE cocktail exclusively at Stay Beautiful - a delicious and potentially head-fvcking blend of vodka, Archers, cranberry, lemonade and fresh lime - at £8.50 per pitcher ALL NIGHT (a wide variety of other cocktails will be served at a tenner per pitcher). Furthermore, as aficionados of messy vodka-guzzling will be aware, Stay Beautiful has a somewhat notorious tradition called the WATERING CAN SONG... *A CURIOUS SMELL, AN INTANGIBLE CRIME...*...and this month's Watering Can Song, in honour of the New Romantic pioneers' reunion (and the song's prominent use in the new series of Ashes To Ashes) is "CHANT No.1" by SPANDAU BALLET. So, when you hear that white-boy funk guitar, the shrill trumpets, and that great big berk Tony Hadley trying to rap, you know it's time to get wet! *FUTURE DATES*Stay Beautiful happens on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly! (See http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm for full dates.) *JOIN US!*If you haven't done so already, add us on Myspace ( http://www.myspace.com/staybeautifulclub ) and join our Facebook group ( http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=2347493121 ) See you there… and don’t forget: DRESS UP! love and poison Simon, Tony, David and Cherry xxx P.S. don't forget to check out our POLAROID gallery: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/gallery.htm...and our YOUTUBE page: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=staybeautifulclub | | Monday, April 27th, 2009 | | 11:15 pm |

Wow, if the last Stay Beautiful seems like forever ago… that’s cos it is. Sorry, we’ve been crazy busy with one thing and another. So, let’s just give you the quick version…
There were a lot of pirates in the house, for some reason. The Vicious Guns, playing their first ever gig, were very cool despite the hindrance of a temperamental laptop (I kept overhearing people saying “I really like this band”, and you can’t ask for more than that). There was a lot of love for the Siouxsie theme (Banshees videos on the big screen, “Spellbound” Watering Can Song, CD giveaway) to tie in with the launch of Simon Price & Cherry Foxxx’s new Brighton alternative-80s night, Spellbound. There was a lot of excitement about Dai Prang’s Rachel Stamp reunion the following Friday (which was awesome, by the way). We played three sneak previews of the new Manics album, but nobody seemed too bothered. Oh and the Bowie vs. MGMT mash-up went down a treat. And that’s all we can remember.
If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - no Polaroids, alas, because Boots don‘t stock them any more, but plenty of digital pics (our own and other people’s harvested off Facebook) - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a smaller selection on our Myspace gallery, and some shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. STAY BEAUTIFUL ON SATURDAY: The Vicious Guns live, Siouxsie prizes and watering can song! luring disco dollies to a life of vice…Stay Beautifulhttp://www.staybeautifulclub.co.ukhttp://www. myspace. com/staybeautifulclubWE PLAY: SLEAZY GLAM // HI-VOLTAGE ELECTRO // GLITTER ROCK // SHOUTY GIRL MUSIC // F UCKED UP DISCO // '77 PUNK // NEW WAVE // ALTERNATIVE ANTHEMS // POP TRASH
*NEXT STAY BEAUTIFUL: SAT 4th APRIL, WITH THE VICIOUS GUNS!*The next Stay Beautiful is on SATURDAY 4th APRIL, and our live band are making their first-ever British appearance. THE VICIOUS GUNS ( http://www.myspace.com/theviciousguns ), the new band from Jennifer MacIsaac, former lead singer with TUULI (the excellent grrl-punk group who may be familiar to those of you with long-ish memories and good taste, and who were often referred to as "the Canadian Kenickie"). The Vicious Guns, a duo comprising MacIsaac and Dickie Haydon, specialise in electro-gothic pop which has been compared to Cyndi Lauper meets Depeche Mode. Go and have a listen at their Myspace - you may already have heard the song "Friends Aren't Friends" at last month's SB - then come along in April to witness their UK touchdown. Further details (Watering Can Song, prize giveaway etc) to follow soon, so watch this space! *WIN CLASSIC SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES ALBUMS!*STOP PRESS… It’s been a while since we ran a competition, but we’ve got a cracker lined up for you this time. On Monday 7th April, a whole load of classic albums by SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES ( http://www.siouxsie.com ) are being reissued in special editions with bonus tracks (demos, 12 inch mixes etc), and thanks to the nice people at Polydor/Universal, we have copies to give away! The albums in question are A KISS IN THE DREAMHOUSE (1982, featuring tracks like “Melt!”, “Slowdive” and “Fireworks”), NOCTURNE (1983 live album, with hits like “Happy House”, “Israel” and “Spellbound” recorded at the Royal Albert Hall), HYAENA (1984, includes “Dazzle”, “Swimming Horses” and “Dear Prudence”) and, lastly, TINDERBOX (1986, includes “Candyman”, “Song From The Edge Of The World” and “Cities In Dust”). All you have to do in order to get your little gothic hands on one of these ultra-desirable items is correctly answer a simple question on the night! *CHEAP BOOZE, FREE BOOZE!*Drinks at the Purple Turtle are, you'll be glad to hear, served at pretty reasonable, pubby prices anyway (certainly compared to one or two of our previous homes). *FROM THE CRADLE BARS COMES A BECKONING VOICE...*...and this month's Watering Can Song, in honour both of Simon and Cherry’s Brighton club night of the same name (launching on Sat 11th April, alt-80s fans!) and this month’s prize giveaway, is "SPELLBOUND" by SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES. So, when you hear that spindly McGeoch guitar intro and the ice queen’s chilling voice, you know it's time to get wet! “How do they do that? Wholesome glam rock grains… but CAKEY!”
That’s what the Geordie horse from the Kelloggs Nutri-Grain ad might have said, had they turned up early to the cakiest Stay Beautiful yet. (Which, given some of the costumes on show, wouldn’t have been entirely surprising.) As usual, there were several birthday girls in the house, but one of them, the lovely Claudia, had taken it upon herself to display immense generosity by re-enacting the Feeding Of The 5,000 (well, OK, the 300, give or take) with an array of cake products spread out on the bar top for everyone to help themselves. By midnight the bar was a battlefield of crumbs and icing. What a lass!
Another birthday girl, Hollie, had a strong influence on the look of the night by encouraging all her friends to come dressed as their favourite toys. These included a game of Twister, a train set, a Victorian doll and a Spiderman (see photos for evidence), an injection of visual interestingness which more than made up for the fact that the projector was broken so we couldn’t show SBTV…
And that’s before we even get to our live band, the hugely impressive Doll And The Kicks, who warmed up for Morrissey’s Years Of Refusal tour (on they will be the support act throughout 2009) with a stunning Stay Beautiful set.
After that, a Stay Beautiful which had started quietly turned into the usual SB mayhem, and things got gloriously messy. Just one symptom of which was the moment Cherry Foxxx told me “A man who looks like Borat just tried to snog me”. It was that kind of night.
From a DJing point of view, it was great to be able to play ‘just’ a regular Stay Beautiful set, with no particular theme to follow. Although there were a couple of topical dedications: Ladytron’s “Paco!” (essentially the Are You Being Served? theme) for the recently-departed Wendy Richard, Flight Of The Conchords’ “Inner City Pressure” to honour the Pet Shop Boys’ Brit award (this got an excited scream), and the Manics’ “You Love Us” for Arthur Scargill on the 25th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike (someone came up to me at the end complaining that Scargill was a ‘knob’, but the majority applauded).
Songs which particularly raised the roof: “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode (everyone seemed overjoyed to hear the original instead of the Saturdays abomination), Jacko’s “Smooth Criminal”, PSB’s “Always On My Mind” and Steve Harley’s “Make Me Smile” (which I only played because I had 3 minutes to fill at the end). Oh, and I executed a particularly sweet mix from IAMX into NIN, if I do say so myself.
If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - no Polaroids, alas, because Boots had run out, but plenty of digital pics (our own and other people’s harvested off Facebook) - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a smaller selection on our Myspace gallery, and some shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. Go see!
Which, pausing only to mention that the NEXT STAY BEAUTIFUL is on SATURDAY 4th APRIL (with Canadian electro-goth-pop duo THE VICIOUS GUNS making their UK debut), brings us to what we actually played…

Event: Stay Beautiful’s All-Grrrl 8th Birthday Party
Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town
Date: Saturday 7th February 2009

So, we are eight! Let’s take the emotional “we owe it all to you” Oscar speeches as read, but it is a pretty amazing landmark for a club night. We’ve celebrated previous birthdays with naughty free compilation CDs and an overload of party-poppers and balloons, but this time we wanted to try something more ambitious.
Stay Beautiful has always been an unusually female-friendly club, both in terms of our crowd and our playlist, and as a one-off experiment, we decided to take that to the extreme with our All-Grrrl Eighth Birthday Party. The concept was simple: no male lead vocals whatsoever, right through till 2.57am anyway (and one of the Manics does wear a dress…) We managed to do it, with just one exception: nobody minded too much when we broke the rule to pay tribute to the recently-departed legend Lux Interior with a quick blast of Cramps.
An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump, with their simple and brutal combination of tribal drums, scuzz-rock guitars and fearsome vocals (X-Bird, C-Bird and D-Bird swapping instruments on nearly every song), were the perfect live band for the occasion, and played a seriously impressive set (we had loads of people coming up to us afterwards gushing about how great they were).
Everyone totally got into the spirit of it, with several ladyboys alongside the authentic females (hello Wasima, Gazette and Loretta, among others), and so many tunes - “Powerpuff Girls”, “Just A Girl”, “It’s Oh So Quiet” (cue mass “ssshhh! Ssshhh!“ audience participation) - sent everyone nuts. Watching a floor full of goths dancing to Diana Ross And The Supremes was one of those “only at Stay Beautiful” moments. Whoops and screams between every tune, incredible atmosphere. The heartbreaker is that we easily had twice as many great songs up our sleeves that we didn’t have time for. We coulda gone on another six hours, swear to god. Maybe we’ll do it again one day…
If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - our own Polaroids plus other people’s digital pics harvested off Facebook - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a smaller selection on our Myspace gallery, and some shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. Gentlemen are welcome to attend - obviously - but you won't hear any male vocals over the speakers, because it's gonna be FEMALE SINGERS ONLY! (Well, not until about approximately 2.57am anyway, and let's face it, the Manics are pretty girly themselves...) Stay Beautiful has always been an unusually female-friendly and grrrl-dominated club, both in terms of our crowd and our music policy, and just this once, we're taking the Girl Power thing all the way. What happened at the Stay Beautiful New Year's Eve Party! luring disco dollies to a life of vice…

WE PLAY: SLEAZY GLAM // HI-VOLTAGE ELECTRO // GLITTER ROCK // SHOUTY GIRL MUSIC // F UCKED UP DISCO // '77 PUNK // NEW WAVE // ALTERNATIVE ANTHEMS // POP TRASH
Event: Stay Beautiful’s New Year’s Eve Party Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town Date: Wednesday 31st December 2008

Sometimes, it’s the little fleeting moments that make the night, and live on in the memory. The bizarre brief encounters, the glimpsed madness, the eavesdropped weirdness which all add up in the brain to a swirling impressionistic chaos which will endure long after the last aching throbs of the next-day hangover have faded away.
For us, the Stay Beautiful New Year’s Eve Party was all about the bloke who walked in off the street in sub-zero temperatures wearing nothing but his underpants (underpants which, it was later noted, had reindeers all over them), and tried to talk his way inside (our door person, admiring his cojones - perhaps literally - quite correctly let him in for free). Or maybe the bitchfight between three trannies in the Gents’ toilets over one of them stealing the other’s boyfriend (classic snatch of dialogue: “You only liked him until he took his wig off…”)
For you, it was probably something completely different. All we know is that it was a phenomenal and unforgettable night. Despite widespread public skintness, we hit our capacity before midnight, with SB-goers arriving from as far afield as Oxford, Northampton, Cardiff, Nottingham, Dundee and even Finland, and the big midnight countdown was a beautiful explosion of balloons, confetti, party poppers and stranger-snogging - fuelled in part by the free Corky’s on arrival, in part by vodka from the Watering Can during Europe’s “The Final Countdown”, and in part by the free bottles of cava and pitchers Jesus Juice given to winners of the Booze Raffle (which saw our Simon drawing upon his bingo caller skills from the days he worked in the same arcade as Nessa out of Gavin & Stacey, in the face of Brucie-inspired heckles of “higher, higher!” and “lower, lower!” from the great unwashed).
We made the inspired mistake of leaving a bottle of champagne in the dressing room of the usually-abstinent David Ryder Prangley, with the result that the absolutely cracking, cover version-heavy set by him and his Witches (see list below) was punctuated by rambling between-song monologues about getting sexually propositioned by Prince and hassled by chavs at bus stops for wearing make-up, and trying to organise an impromptu kissing contest. And, even addled by the fizzy stuff, he still almost remembered the lyrics to “Celebrity Skin”…
DJ-wise we went for a shameless party-hard greatest hits playlist, and some songs not-at-all-literally took the roof off: notably “Dancing Queen”, “Disco 2000”, “Time To Pretend”, plus Simon’s merciless “Don’t Stop Me Now”/“Party Hard”/“Blitzkrieg Bop” triple assault and Cherry Foxxx’s killer mixes from “Masses” into “Welcome To The Jungle” and from “Playgirl” into “Freak Like Me”. (Although we were taken aback that it was Katy bloody Perry, way down the bottom of our Top 20 of 2008 countdown, that got the dancing started!).
Oh, and the unveiling of SBTV (that is, our continuous montage of stills burned onto a DVD after many hours spent mastering Windows Moviemaker, and ranging from classic images of Stay Beautiful icons to Polaroids of punters at the club to covers from trashy queersploitation novels to My Little Pony porn) seemed to go down well. Hope you appreciated it…
The stage and the dancefloor was packed and the atmosphere buzzing right up till our later-than-usual closing time of 4.00am, and there were definitely a hardcore who would happily have carried on carousing and cavorting until 5.00, 6.00 or even sunrise. Even if most of them were by this point speaking in noises which barely counted as English any more.
If you want to re-live it all, we’ve got some fantastic photos - our own Polaroids plus other people’s digital pics harvested off Facebook - in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then the various subsections), as well as a selection on our Myspace gallery - go see! - but alas no shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub this time because our cameraphone screwed up.
Which, pausing only to mention that the NEXT STAY BEAUTIFUL is our ALL-GRRRL 8th BIRTHDAY PARTY (female vocals only!) on SATURDAY 7th FEBRUARY, brings us to what we actually played…

WE PLAY: SLEAZY GLAM // HI-VOLTAGE ELECTRO // GLITTER ROCK // SHOUTY GIRL MUSIC // F UCKED UP DISCO // '77 PUNK // NEW WAVE // ALTERNATIVE ANTHEMS // POP TRASH

Event: Stay Beautiful’s Nightmare Before Christmas (and SB 100!) Venue: Purple Turtle, Camden Town Date: Saturday 6th December 2008
The 100th Stay Beautiful - I know, I know, it’s unbelievable - started well enough, with a couple of topical tunes (“100 Years” by The Cure, “Century” by The Long Blondes) to mark the occasion, and the place was filling up nicely with the beautiful people as DJ Cherry Foxxx was just about to play our first festive track of the night (“Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses, fact fans) when… nee-nar, nee-nar, nee-nar, f#cking fire alarm. Second time in two years. Great. (No, we didn’t take photos this time. Novelty’s worn off.)
Cue everyone filing outside on the pavement, many people shivering in flimsy and revealing dresses (“and that was just the boys“, etc etc), and waiting patiently for over half an hour for the fire brigade to turn up and give the all-clear (God help us if there actually HAD been a fire, eh?), while members of Rosie And The Goldbug walked up and down sharing their stash of vodka and Chupa-Chups. (As well they might, because it turned out to be an idiot friend of theirs who set off the alarm in the first place…)
Once back inside, we reluctantly slashed several songs from our setlists (apologies to anyone who asked for requests we were unable to play), and made way for Rosie And The Goldbug. Who were quite excellent, by the way, living up to those Dresden Dolls/Kate Bush/Goldfrapp comparisons, giving some strange explanations for their lyrics (one involved someone shoving mushrooms inside their “fanny flaps”), and a bizarre helium-pitched Christmas story to do with a “salty fig”, played on Rosie’s laptop. They’ll go a long way. And I don’t just mean back to Cornwall.
Following their set, we went into full-on Nightmare Before Christmas mode, plying you all with mince pies, Christmas crackers and giant Santa and snowman balloons (which seemed to go POP down on the dance floor at a faster rate than I was able to inflate them, grrr!).
Every time we played a Christmas song, Santa Cherry Foxxx gave out goodie bags. No expense was spared: we went to Poundland, the 99p store and the doomed Woolworth’s to fill them with candy canes, chocolate coins, glitter and balloons, as well as CDs by the likes of AC/DC, Brett Anderson, Dresden Dolls, Ladytron, The Clash, Girls Aloud, Motley Crue, Soft Cell, Nick Cave, Goldfrapp, Crystal Castles, Alphabeat, Madonna, T. Rex and, in roughly 1 in 5 bags, the debut album by Rosie And The Goldbug themselves. Hope you got something you liked…
And, if we say so ourselves, we ROCKED. Particularly popular tunes included Kate Bush‘s “Babooshka”, Britney’s “Womanizer”, both Liza Minnelli ‘Cabaret’ tunes, MGMT’s “Kids”, the Manics’ “Judge Yrself”, Amanda Palmer’s “Leeds United”, the big singalong from Bugsy Malone and the big Christmas tunes by Mariah, The Pogues and Wizzard…
If you want to re-live it, we’ve got some fantastic photos in our main gallery: http://s92.photobucket.com/albums/l27/staybeautifulclub (click ‘Purple Turtle era’ then ‘Live bands’), plus shaky, hand-held video clips on our Youtube account http://uk.youtube.com/user/staybeautifulclub. Go see!
Which, pausing only to mention that the NEXT STAY BEAUTIFUL is the NEW YEAR‘S EVE PARTY and tickets are on sale NOW from The Purple Turtle (£10 advance), brings us to what we actually played…
